74xx or 40xx?
74xx (TTL) chips run on 5V. CD40xx (CMOS) chips accept a wide supply range, roughly 3V to 15V, and use very little power. Tie unused inputs to ground or the supply, and fit a 0.1µF capacitor close to each chip’s power pins. IC sockets make chips easy to swap.
