Addressable or plain?
Addressable LEDs (WS2812B, WS2811) let you set each LED’s colour from a single data pin with libraries such as FastLED. Plain 12V 5050 strip changes colour all at once and needs a MOSFET or controller. Budget about 60mA per WS2812B at full white, and power long strips from both ends.
